Comment on the strike
Notwithstanding the strike, GWR have NO staff rota at weekends - they rely on the goodwill of their employees to arrange their own itinery, depending if they are free at the weekend or not. How can the Government allow a public service to be run on that basis?
Only Sundays are outside the standard week on GWR (and many other companies), but there are rostered Sunday duties. It's then up to the staff to swap duties or refuse the shift. Enhanced Sunday payments help overcome rostering problems.
It was ever thus on the railway, for many years the only way to get a good wage was to work as many night or Sunday or restday turns as possible. Even with Hidden Inquiry recommendations ( Maximum of 12 shifts in 14 days) and a higher base salary old habits die hard...
