Island Line Engineering Works

Improving your railway

From 4 January to 31 March 2021, services on Island Line will be replaced by buses, whilst we work to upgrade the line’s infrastructure.

This work includes the construction of a new passing loop at Brading allowing for a regular 30-minute service, enhancements to the track to improve the quality of the ride, upgrade to platforms to improve access to the Class 484 trains (below), and the installation of new ticket vending machines at Shanklin, Sandown and Ryde St John’s Road.

Following these works, the Class 484 trains will be introduced into service, with the regular 30-minute service introduced in May 2021.

Planning your journey

Throughout these works, replacement buses will run to keep our passengers moving. Buses will run between Shanklin and Ryde Esplanade, with a minibus operating along Ryde Pier Head to connect passengers with Wightlink Ferries.

Timings of replacement buses will be confirmed soon.
